Sports briefs. Dimitrov, Halep, Man United.

Good win for Grigor
So there we have it, another WTA win for the Romanian Simona Halep who beat Stosur in the final in Moscow in straight sets. It was easy in the end but the first set was hard, hard work. Stosur played some great tennis this week and deserved her shot in the final, but once again Simona is proving that she is top 10, even top 5 material in my eyes.

Again, from a betting perspective she has been gold dust. Bookies continue to give lush odds which cannot be backed away from. Even punters are seemingly incapable of trusting the most trustworthy player in both tours. Never mind, keep opposing I say.

Grigor Dimitrov won his event against Ferrer in Stockholm 2-6 6-3 6-4. It was an excellent effort from Dimitrov but I must say I'm still not convinced. He is very heavily backed on the tour and is constantly touted as a top five player. Again, not sure; this week he beat Ferrer in the final who in my opinion looks like he's slightly on the wane but apart from that the draw was pretty hopeless. Anyway well done to Grigor.

Tweeters were laughing at the Man United price against Southampton only for them to have egg on their faces and shows that once again, betting with the masses if you are that way inclined is fraught with danger. I didn't touch it, but personally if pushed a lay of United would have been my shout. Australia chased down a huge 300 score to beat India as Ishant Sharma crumbled in the final overs.

This week in the tennis we have the Basel/Valencia event and the Tour Finals in the WTA. Should be good.

Juventus lost 4-2 after winning 2-0 and Liverpool couldn't beat 10 man Toon in a couple of surprise results, and Torino-Inter finished 3-3 in a brilliantly exciting match last night with Inter playing with 10 men for almost the entire match.

Simona Halep continues to smash layers, pundits and opponents. (New Haven). This time, Wozniacki gets owned.

Ensured that glory girl Wozza, couldn't just turn up
Yesterday's coverage of the Simona Halep-Caroline Wozniacki match was nothing short of disrespectful to the Romanian star. First and foremost, bookies had Wozniacki a clear favourite and apparently all she had to do was turn up and turn over Halep. Wozniacki is of course 'high profile', and, as we were reminded about on every other point, a former world number one and grand slam finalist.

But what year are we in now? Hmm? Last time I checked it was 2013 not 2010.

Sam Smith was simply drooling over Wozniacki. The main points were that she possesses a great forehand, a great backhand, serves well and is one of the best competitors in women's tennis. All this was said before Halep handed Wozniacki's ass on a plate and before the commentators spent three seconds summarizing Halep as basically a Grand Slam bottler. It was painful to hear.

Anybody that has followed women's tennis (and no, not JUST the Slams) knows that Halep is now a formidable opponent. The life was getting sucked right from Caroline last night during that first set as Halep exchanged ground strokes, big serves and deft squash shots in and around the net. To put it bluntly, apart from the opening stanza of the second set which Halep does have some work to do when she temporarily lets her opponent off the hook, Halep owned Wozniacki.

At one stage Wozniacki was getting the dressing down off her old man and looked thoroughly dejected and deflated after a string of winners from Halep, who doesn't "have the hitting power".....said the expert pundits before the match. Make no mistake about it this was a beating; and Wozniacki knows it. Before her, a string of other opponents now know it. The beauty of Halep is that she is winning tennis matches in a variety of ways. She has come back numerous times from a set down, she has also come back numerous times from a set and two breaks down in the second. Coming from behind is not a new concept, but last night she led the way from start to finish adding just one more variation to her game. Even her serve looked much more solid.

On critical points Halep found the answers. She also has a typical Romanican feistiness about her and let out some great emotion once or twice even when winning. This is fabulous stuff. It shows that she is making the transition from being a respected tricky opponent to a top ten player. I said as much in May. I stand by what I said. And I think Halep is fast gaining the respect of every women on the tour.

The only one she hasn't got the respect from is probably Williams. Williams beat her up in the first set of their recent match, but this happens. Halep made a much better fist of the second (losing it 6-4) which shows that she can at least get back into a match after a first set drubbing. Halep is strong mentally, and she knows her place in the pecking order. She knows that her best and Serena's will see the American through 9 times out of 10, but week by week, Halep is becoming more and more confident and it's only a matter of time before players like herself and Stephens start challenging for more honours more consistently.

She now has the final against Kvitova (another one who just has to turn up say the experts) and then onto the US Open.

Money maker Halep does it again, and yet again gives punters a range of winning odds

Halep has been a dream to punt on
The Queen of tennis punting ONCE AGAIN defied the odds to rake it in for me yesterday with a quite brilliant comeback against nemesis Carla Suarez Navarro. Quite bluntly, Simona Halep has been the biggest winner in terms of a singular betting entity in my entire betting history.

If you want more in depth information regarding why I rate her so highly then scroll through my blog or look at the label down the right hand side for keywords 'Simona' and 'Halep'; but for the purposes of here and now let me continue.

Yesterday she came into the match at around 1.36. But the beauty of Simona is that she is lightening slow out of the blocks most of the time. This gives punters a clear range of entry points, and mostly you can read her like a book. From 1.36, I took her personally at around 1.75, evens, 2.35, 2.75, 3.25 and finally at around 3.5. She lost the first set, and was down in the second, but this is the interesting thing with Simona; it's only THEN does she start playing. It's literally like she has to play half an hour before she wakes up. Yesterday, she raked in over £200 for me. Over the course of the season, primarily from May, Halep has recorded personal profits of over £1000. This is absolutely staggering.

I'm well open to the possibility that the bubble will burst now and again, and this is why going to the well once to often, especially now if you're into laws of averages, may be a move filled with caution. But there is absolutely no doubt, that Serena aside, Halep can turn a match against anyone.

Click on the table to the left to have a looksie at how Halep has performed since May in Rome.

So what is her edge? The edge comes with not being straight forward, but ultimately winning. She is a slow starter, or indeed loses a set, but the interesting thing is her mental capacity. Yesterday she was out of the door against Navarro and won. She was 3-1 down and 4-2 down in the second set after losing her serve for two consecutive games, but absolutely blitzed Navarro 6-1 in the final set. Her mental toughness is staggering.

She was a set all against Stosur recently before blitzing her 6-2 in the final set. She was a set down to Bartoli, then won the final set 6-1 again. She was a set down to Hsieh before winning the next two 6-2 6-1. Meusburger; again 6-1 in the final set. The only real jot on the copybook is the Roland Garros match v Na Li, but this match was just insane anyway and I'm not sure anyone knows what happened there (2-6, 6-1, 0-6).

The point is with Halep, is that during her matches she opens up the odds something incredible. The way she starts poorly and grows into a match almost working her opponent out as she goes along has been something that I hope she continues.

A point of caution though. For me she has been first rate for months in a range of circumstances, but please bet on your own back! As mentioned this bubble may burst (although I hope it goes on forever) and so bet responsibly. It may be that this is just a purple patch of a lifetime, and for me, an edge of a lifetime.

Bartoli bows out of tennis for good after Halep loss

Marion Bartoli, the champion of Wimbledon, has bowed out of tennis after losing in three sets to money maker Simona Halep in Cincinnati. Breaking down in an interview post match she cited constant niggling injury as a main reason why she feels she can no longer go on in the game. Marion has been a credit to the sport, a wonderful champion and deserves all the adulation she gets from her supporters and fellow professionals.

Halep back in action

Simona Halep came back from a set down to convincingly beat Hsieh yesterday. The straight sets blog bet was lost but the in-play bets more than made up for it with wagers at 1.5 and 2.42. Great to see her back and hopefully she can make us a couple of quid yet again.
